Australian heavyweights Adam Scott and Jason Day steered clear of trouble at Muirfield on Friday to creep further into contention on a bunching leaderboard at the British Open 12ax7.

Masters champion Scott posted a one-over-par 72 while three-time major runner-up Day shot an even-par round as most of the field continued to struggle on the demanding Scottish links course omega 價錢.

The leading pack also found the going tough with Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez's second-round 71 enough to give him the outright lead at three-under 139 at the halfway stage.

Tiger Woods (71) and Lee Westwood (68) are among four players one shot back while Scott, tied 11th at one over and Day, tied 20th at two over, are within striking distance.

Marcus Fraser (74), at five over, also made the cut while an eight-over total was good enough to let Geoff Ogilvy (75) and Peter Senior (76) sneak into the weekend cloud solution.

American Dustin Johnson (72) and Swede Henrik Stenson (70) were in the tie for second while American Zach Johnson, who led at five-under after the first round, hit 75 to be a further shot back.

While many players struggled to cope with a lightning-quick surface on Thursday, a change in wind direction and the some watering of the greens added a new level on unpredictability on Friday.

Following an even-par opening round, morning starter Scott took time to adjust as he dropped two shots on the front nine.

But he remained focused, clinching a crucial birdie at the par-5 17th after reaching the green in two.

Scott, looking to make amends for his dramatic late collapse at the 2012 event, remains optimistic in his desperate pursuit of the Claret Jug personalized clothing labels.

"I think I'm in pretty good shape," the Australian world No.4 said.

"Hopefully I can put a move on and get right into it tomorrow."

Day's round featured five birdies and five bogeys and the 25-year-old revealed he was still being troubled by an injury.

At first thinking he had a strained right wrist, Day sought further medical advice after his first round and now thinks the problem could be a pinched nerve near his shoulder.

The injury will keep Day off the practice range for the second straight round but he's also aiming to make a weekend move.

"Me and Scotty are in that same position where we just have to stay patient, that's a very big key out there," Day said.

"You can't be aggressive around a course like this ... it's just really trying to be patient and take the birdies when you can and try and minimise the bogeys Jewelry hong kong."

Early starter Fraser dropped six shots in his last six holes but in the end it was comfortably enough to secure his first weekend appearance in six tournaments.

Marc Leishman (+9), Steve Dartnall (+10), John Senden (+11), John Wade (+13), Brett Rumford (+14) and Brendan Jones (+14) made early exits.

They were in good company with world No.2 Rory McIlroy (+12), US Open champion Justin Rose (+10) and Luke Donald (+10) also eliminated.

Scott will begin his third round on Saturday at 2.20pm (2320AEST) alongside a fellow Masters winner in South African Charl Schwartzel top up degree.

Day, paired with American Hunter Mahan, begins at 2235AEST.  

A day which began with Jarryd Hayne's withdrawal finally delivered some good news for the NSW State of Origin side with back-rower Greg Bird declared an almost certain starter for the series decider.

While skipper Paul Gallen remains a 50-50 proposition as he battles a foot injury, scans on the ankle injury Bird sustained playing for Gold Coast on Saturday night could not have been more positive for the Blues jeans embroidery.

"There was no bone bruising - once then swelling goes away he should be pretty good so hopefully run Friday, train by Sunday," NSW team doctor Nathan Gibbs said.

While Bird was away getting scans, Gallen joined the team as they took part in a light training run at Coogee Oval - but he was only a spectator with the moon boot he has worn for the past two weeks still strapped to his foot.

"He's still 50-50," Gibbs said of Gallen.

"From one Origin to the next, three week recovery is pretty line ball."

The loss of either Gallen or Bird would have been a devastating blow for a Blues side which lost its most experienced player in Hayne barely an hour into the squad's preparation for the Origin decider.

Shadow player James McManus - who has scored five tries in his past two NRL matches for Newcastle - was called up to the main squad wine class, for his first Origin game since his debut game in the 2009 series opener.

Hayne had held out hope for a miracle as he arrived at the team hotel, but it was never a realistic proposition.

Gibbs confirmed scans taken last week suggested Hayne's rehabilitation from a hamstring strain suffered playing for Parramatta 48 hours after Origin I was another three weeks away.

But coach Laurie Daley's desperation to have Hayne in the side was evident in the fact he was willing to punt on a player who has not played in a month, but the risk proved too great.

"It's a massive game and one that he would have wanted to be a part of," Daley said.

"He's our most experienced player but you move on.

"He was disappointed and would have liked to have given it a few more days but the risk was too heavy."

Speaking before he was officially ruled out, Hayne spoke about the devastation of missing a game in which the Blues could have secured their first series win since 2005.

"Just being a part of it knowing that I've based the pre-season around this game, I've based this whole season around this series - everyone has," Hayne said.

"For that to be taken away through injury is obviously devastating.

"There's nothing I can do. Whatever I could do I've done."

For McManus however he now has a shot at redemption, after his only previous Origin experience ended in a 28-18 loss to Queensland.

"It's a monkey off my back," McManus said Asian college of knowledge management.

"It's something I wanted to do again - it's been a few years, I finally got here.

"I got the call about midday - I was just off the plane on my way home and Loz said Haynesy was no good, I'm starting."  

If you're one who's likely to complain about personal space on flights, spare a thought for New Zealand's newest resident, Fanana apply ielts.

The 2.6 metre male giraffe has made the flight across the Tasman, scraping in just under the maximum height requirements for the aircraft in his 2.9m-high cage Asian college of knowledge management.

Fanana, a nine-month-old who hails from NSW's Taronga Western Plains Zoo, was lifted onto Auckland Airport's tarmac at about 8am on Thursday.

During his journey to Christchurch's Orana Wildlife Park, Fanana will experience travel by air, road and sea, with a ferry due to chauffeur him across the Cook Strait on Thursday night.

So far Fanana hasn't had to be sedated and is described as "easy going".

Orana Park staff say Fanana was flown across the Tasman because he is the optimum height and the journey is quicker and easier on the animal storage unit.

"If we had to transfer him by boat, it would be a much longer journey," Orana Wildlife Park spokesman Nathan Hawke told NZ Newswire.

"Any animal transport is really stressful so if we can eliminate that through getting them here quickly then that's what we do."

Fanana is being brought to Orana Wildlife Park to replace Harold, the park's only bull who died last year.

Orana says the nine-month-old giraffe is a good match for the park's female giraffes and brings their herd to five.

The park has successfully bred 17 calves to date formation of company.

Earlier this year, a 15-month-old female giraffe named Nakuru was shipped from Auckland Zoo to Melbourne for breeding.

Nakuru's arrival was delayed after her ship detoured to rescue a Victorian solo yachtsman who got into trouble off the coast of Australia.

At 4.2 metres, Nakuru's crate was too high for her to fly chenille embroidery patches.
